I spent my summer vacation reading four biographies of Mme. de Pompadour in a row. When a subject is ineffably delicious and none too wholesome, l'appetit vient en mangeant, and my appetite for the Marquise increased the more I read. She seems to have had the same effect on her lover, Louis XV, and on her young husband, the royally cuckolded M. d'Etioles. He fainted when he was told that he had lost her, along with his honor and his hopes for an heir. Louis's droit du seigneur was beyond appeal, and the adulteress was madly in love. D'Etioles retired with dignity and consoled himself like a gentleman--with a chorus ...
