Mahantongo blanket chests.
Isolated by mountain ranges to the northwest and southeast, the long, fertile Mahantongo Creek valley in central Pennsylvania is a land where time had slowed. The Pennsylvania Germans who lived there between the late 1820s and the early 1840s made furniture decorated with brightly colored designs of modernist simplicity rendered in a palette of green, yellow, red, blue, and black. For many collectors today the relatively late date of this traditional furniture expresses a sense of isolation from the rest of the United States, which was at that time in the process of industrializing, as well as a community effort to retain old values and practices in the face of change. ...
