Continuing its buying spree, BB&T Corp. will acquire FloridaFirst Bancorp of Lakeland for $135 million.

BB&T will pick up $812 million in assets and 18 offices, including three in Manatee County.

The Winston-Salem, N.C.- based bank gained its foothold in Florida less than three weeks ago when it completed its purchase of First South Bank.

"We're committed to building a strong presence in Florida, one of the nation's fastest-growing and most economically attractive states," said John Allison, BB&T's chairman and chief executive, on Thursday.
