The clear distinction between an academic and a vocational course of study in proposed changes for the grade 10 to 12 school curriculum is a step in the right direction, New National Party spokesman Dr Boy Geldenhuys said on Wednesday. "Apparently the aim of the new matric curriculum is to ensure a higher access rate to universities and technicons. Hopefully this will not result in the lowering of standards," he said in a statement. On Tuesday, Education Minister Kader Asmal told journalists in Pretoria fundamental changes proposed for the grade 10 to 12 school curriculum would include the reduction of the current 124 subjects to 35. The revised national curriculum statement for grade 10 to 12 -- the so-called further education and training (FET) band -- would be gazetted by October 21. The cut-off date for comment would be the end of January. The provisional implementation date was 2004.
