Port of Spain, Trinidad: Almost 15,000 persons were casting ballots here on Tuesday [1 October] as special electors, including police officers, were given an opportunity of voting ahead of the 7 October general elections in Trinidad and Tobago.

Six political parties, representing 101 candidates and one independent, are facing the electorate for the 36-member parliament.

The offices of the returning officers were opened at nine this morning [all times local] and will close at three o'clock this afternoon, continuing daily until Sunday to facilitate the voting.
