With some anxiety I climbed the stairs to re-visit A Foreign Affair, five years after my previous very happy visit.

What a delight to find it looking just as modern and fresh and with attention to detail, as I remembered it. I was especially excited to see that every table was set with nice white cloths, but what caught my eye was little pepper grinders on every table. Wow! Most restaurants have staff visit the table before one has a chance to taste the food, waving a large pepper grinder asking 'would you like ground pepper'.

I find it annoying as I prefer to taste before adding anything. A Foreign Affair also set their tables with sea salt and extra virgin olive oil in a small bowl. Butter is served on request. We had booked a table for 6.30pm, and though we arrived slightly late, we were offered 'the early-bird special'.

It was explained that if we were happy to leave by or soon after 8pm, we could still take advantage of the special offer. For $20 we were offered a choice of two mains, a dessert and a glass of wine.

Both mains sounded too good to pass up, so we ordered both, and a glass each of red and white wine. A bonus came in the form of a large piece each of grilled bread, which was delicious and made in-house. The wine also was very agreeable.

My friend loved the restaurant so much she returned soon after with a vegetarian friend.
