Tokyo, 2 October: Powerful Typhoon Higos slammed into the Kanto region late Tuesday, [1 October] leaving two persons dead, one missing and 18 others injured and a swathe of destruction.

The typhoon hit land at the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture around 8.00 p.m., sweeping past the industrial city of Kawasaki about 30 minutes later.

Police said a 53-year-old security guard in Yokohama was killed when he was hit by a window that fell from the ninth floor of a building. Another person in Kanagawa was missing.

One 49-year-old man in Sahara, Chiba Prefecture was electrocuted Tuesday night when he touched a severed electric cable, according to Chiba prefectural police.

Eighteen people in seven prefectures - Tochigi, Ibaraki, Gunma, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Shizuoka, and Aichi - were injured due to the typhoon, which the meteorological agency said is one of the strongest to strike the Kanto region after World War II.

There was widespread blackout in Kanto and Tohoku.
