MANILA, Oct 1 Asia Pulse - The country's budding egg industry has the potential of becoming a vital cog in helping ensure not only food security but also in promoting good health of the Philippines' burgeoning population.
Industry leaders like Gregorio San Diego have expressed optimism that the "newly hatched "egg industry could grow into a full-grown fowl so that it can play a major role in turning the wheels of agricultural development to higher level of growth.
This optimistic prediction is mainly anchored on the collaboration and unification of efforts of egg producers from the different parts of the county that resulted in the formation of the National Federation of Egg Producers of the Philippines (NFEPP), otherwise known as the Egg Board.
The federation which was formed four years ago, has 10 chapter members comprising the Batangas Egg Producers Association, Rizal Poultry and Livestock Association Inc., Central Luzon Egg Producers Association and Southern Philippines Egg Producers Association, among others.
Just like any other organization, the federation was formed with specific objectives in mind to bolster their business.Included in the objectives are the exchanging and sharing of ideas, experiences, information and technology and management know-how to improve their respective business and the industry as a whole.
But more importantly, the egg producers unified themselves to find solutions to any problem that the industry may face. And today, one of the biggest problems of the industry is the low per capita egg consumption which has gone down further from the previous years' data.
At 42 eggs per person per year,it is considered to be the lowest per capita consumption in the Asian region.
