SEOUL, Oct 1 Asia Pulse - The Ministry of Construction and Transportation said Tuesday the usage of direct flight air routes between South and North Korea numbered 41 on single flight basis as of the end of September since the historic Inter-Korean summit in June 2000..
The ministry said the frequency of using West Sea routes totaled 33 and East Sea route 8 times.
North Korea's Air Koryo used the route 18 times, while South Korea's Korean Air and Asiana Airlines flew the route 18 times. Foreign airlines used the route five times.
The ministry said U.S. special envoy James Kelly and his entourage are expected to fly to Pyongyang through the West Sea route on Thursday and on Tuesday, a South Korean Catholic group is scheduled to fly to Pyongyang at the invitation of North Korean Catholic Church Association.
Vladimir Yakovlev, mayor of St. Petersburg used the East Sea route to visit Seoul last April and in July the route was used to carry personnel for the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization(KEDO). Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov used the route to visit North Korea.
North Korean athletes used the route last month to fly to Busan to participate in the Asian Games.
