MELBOURNE Oct 1 Asia Pulse - Australian drug developer Biota Holdings Ltd (ASX:BTA) said today it was unsure why a known corporate raider had become the company's biggest shareholder.
Biota told shareholders in its notice of its annual general meeting that earlier this week, Perth-based Farooq Khan's Bigshop.com.au Ltd and other related companies had acquired a 6.9 per cent stake stake in Biota, making Bigshop.com.au (ASX:BIG) the largest shareholder in Biota.
"We are unaware of the intentions of either Bigshop.com.au or Mr Khan in relation to your company," Biota chairman John Grant said in the notice.
"We understand from press reports that Mr Khan, his companies and their associates have a history of acquiring a minority shareholding position in companies with significant cash reserves and then employing that position to take, or attempt to take, board control of such companies."
