CANBERRA, Oct 1 Asia Pulse - The only reason the federal government was toying with a war tax was to pay the $A1.3 billion ($US702.65 million) 2001-02 deficit, Opposition Leader Simon Crean said today.
Some government ministers have left open the option of a levy to pay for Australia's participation in any war against Iraq, although Prime Minister John Howard has called the proposal ludicrous.
"There is no case for a war tax. What is the government's justification for it?" Mr Crean told the Nine Network.
"Our troops went to the Gulf War in `91, no special tax was brought in.
"We went to Timor and despite a special tax being touted it wasn't needed, and we've gone to Afghanistan without a special tax.
