SYDNEY, Oct 1 Asia Pulse - The ACTU (Australian Council of Trade Unions) today said they would go forward with a test case to extend unpaid maternity leave despite fierce opposition from the federal government and employer groups.
The federal government has shot down the plan by Australia's peak union movement to have unpaid maternity leave extended to three years or more.
Workplace Relations Minister Tony Abbott said the idea would never get a look-in under the government, which would oppose the test case to be run next year.
Mr Abbott described the proposal as impractical and over-the-top and said it would destroy jobs.
But ACTU president Sharan Burrow said a debate was needed and she was disappointed at Mr Abbott's response.
"We simply want to have a debate about how you shape work for the 21st century that's a win-win for both employers and the family," Ms Burrow told Seven Sunrise.
