North Korea fought off a third quarter rally from the United Arab Emirates to clinch their place in the quarterfinal stage of the basketball tournament. Their 85-64 victory in their opening preliminary match at the Geumjeong Gymnasium was enough to ensure their place in the next round and means there is a good chance of a meeting of the two Koreas later this week, an encounter that their giant center Ri Myong-hun said would justify their coming to Busan.

``North Korea wants reunification very much and it is for that reason we are taking part in these games," said Ri, who at 2.35 meters is the tallest athlete at the Asiad.

Helped by the noisy backing of fans from both sides of the demilitarized zone the North Koreans took a step toward the encounter by stretching out a 19-point lead at 52-33 early in the second half on the back of accurate free throw and perimeter ...
