BUSAN _ Inadequate facilities at the Main Press Center have left a number of domestic and foreign reporters here to cover the 14th Asian Games in limbo, tainting the nation's image as information-technology powerhouse.
Most necessary pieces of equipment, such as telephones and fax machines, are scarce. There is not a single desktop with Internet access available for most writers. Frustrated by the superficially attractive facilities, some foreign reporters have fumed over the lack of foreign-language service as well as data on the Games.
`` We didn't expect such things to happen when we came here. South Korea is considered one of the developed countries of Asia,'' said Eddy Alinea from the Philippines' Bulletine-Tempo daily.
``Hiroshima and Bangkok provided free computers with Internet access and an excellent working environment to all us foreign reporters. Here, they haven't,'' he said.
The Filipino journalist said that, based on past experiences, he had opted to leave his laptop at home, but now has to borrow other reporters' notebook computers to write articles.
According to Alinea, Some 30 Filipino reporters are now struggling to share a handful of laptops.
