BUSAN _ Southern men are more handsome, and Northern women are more beautiful. Or is beauty in the eye of the beholder?

No matter which of the sayings, the former a Korean one, is true, the beauty of the mostly female North Korean cheering squad have fast stolen the hearts of Southerners at the Asian Games, often generating more interest than on the athletes themselves.

At the Opening Ceremony at the Busan Asiad Main Stadium on Sunday, a huge crowd formed around the brightly-clad clan of the young North Korean artists gracing the southern end of the venue.

Wearing fluorescent orange, pink and green hanboks, traditional dresses with voluminous skirts coming down to their ankles, some 100 members of the squad displayed a somewhat orderly yet jubilant cheering for their national team throughout two hours.

Way after teary-eyed Kye Sun-hui, carrying the torch with Ha Hyoung-joo, paused in front of them and most of the guests had emptied their seats in other parts of the stadium, the North Koreans stayed on for nearly half an hour singing traditional tunes.

``The North Korean women are very pleasant to the eyes,'' remarked a Southern photographer. ``I have virtually fixed my camera in front of them and taken some 1,000 shots already.''
