Foreign business people and officials wishing to visit North Korea's newly announced special economic zone without visas will have to wait longer after the Chinese government appeared to snub the proposal to allow free access to the city abutting China.
At a border checkpoint, Chinese authorities refused to allow foreigners without visas to cross the border into Shinuiju, a North Korean city of 400,000 on the banks of the Yalu River, yesterday, saying that it had not received such orders.
``We have yet to receive any orders or instructions to allow Koreans or foreigners to enter North Korea without visas,'' a Chinese immigration official said, suggesting that the Chinese-born chief executive of the North Korean special administrative region did not consult with the Chinese side about the visa issue.
Yang Bin, who was appointed by North Korea to lead the ambitious project, over the weekend made assurances that foreigners would be able to enter the North Korean city without visas beginning this week because North Korea had worked out details for the issue.
