Saudi Arabia has recalled its ambassador to Qatar for consultations. No reason was given for the move, which was announced in brief reports on 29 September by Saudi TV and the official Saudi news agency, SPA.

BBC correspondents said relations between the two countries had been strained in recent months over the Qatar-based satellite TV station, Al-Jazeera.

In July, Saudi Arabia was reported to have demanded an apology from Qatar over comments broadcast by the station which it said insulted the Saudi royal family.
