ON THE FACE OF IT, Alan Trounson's attack on opponents to his work in embryonic stem-cell research (which appeared in the Australian, 1st August 2002), does not help develop the informed public discussion that is needed about this matter. That may not entirely be the fault of the world-famed Monash Medical Centre bio-medical researcher and it may come down to poor reporting. But still, Professor Trounson seems, on that occasion, to have presented himself as a spokesman for reason and scientific progress. He was not exactly inviting debate about the self-interest of bio-medical researchers like himself who claim to see no problem at all with embryonic stem-cell research.
