SIR: I am not convinced by some of the assertions in your editorial (July-August 2002). Given the effect of abortion on a significant number of women undergoing the procedure (see Melinda Tankard Reist's Giving Sorrow Words) and the intense grief experienced by some of the fathers and the dehumanising impact on the doctors performing abortions (read Bernard Nathanson's writings) it is difficult to see how "abortion is less morally reprehensible than the harvesting of embryonic tissue". You yourself mention that late-term abortions complicate the issue.
The contention of whether the possibility of twinning up to fourteen days gestation definitively eliminates the possibility of a human being commencing with fertilisation is problematical.
