SIR: Thanks are due to Peter Ryan (July-August 2002) for defending John Curtin against David Day's slur that he was afraid of flying. Both Curtin and Menzies as wartime prime ministers had to put their lives on the line by flying overseas, when even domestic air travel was risky.
