With over two hundred startling, transformative photographs, Pregnant Pictures is a gorgeous book inviting readers to flip through its pages. Pregnant Pictures thus possesses a bit of the capacity for spectacle that Sandra Mathews and Laura Wexler discern in pregnancy, and though this book offers a thoughtful and powerful critique of the scopic gaze, it is itself replete with scopic pleasures. Yet there is more to the desire and delight in looking at this lovely new book, for though we may not have known it, we have long waited and needed this rich array of images.
