Welcome to Issue 110, which features, among other things, some more in-depth loudspeaker and component reviews by David Rich, including a review of what Dr. Rich asserts--with objective evidence to back up his subjective claim--is the world's finest-sounding loudspeaker system. The bad news is that the system costs $6,000; the good news is that price includes amplification and a subwoofer.

In our Music section, two of our reviewers report on recordings that they have already determined will be on their "Best Recordings of 2006 List," so you can get a sneak preview of next winter's list. In addition, John Puccio brings us more of his recommendations of the best classical recordings on CD.

To fit in all of these things, we have omitted some of our usual columns from this issue. Trust me, they will be back. They were just on summer vacation.

Compact Notes: By my count, Gunter Wand has recorded the Bruckner Fifth Symphony three times in the last 15 years. They say practice makes perfect, but I still found this latest attempt, with the Berlin Philharmonic (RCA 09026-68503-2), to be less than inspiring. What's more, I found the sound

Reader Emmett Byrem makes two good points in his letter in Issue 98. First, he finds the sound of the Rossini Overtures with Marriner on PentaTone Classics' SACD (presumably in the two-channel stereo mode) inferior to his copy of the Overtures on Philips CDR 950. Second, he wonders why I'm

Bach: Orchestral Suites Nos. 1-3. Philip Ledger, English Chamber Orchestra. Virgin Classics 7243 4 82118 2. Philip Ledger is an exacting conductor, and the English Chamber Orchestra is a meticulous ensemble, so you would expect anything they did to be pretty good. These Bach Orchestral Suites are,
