SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Infectious disease specialists and health ambassadors from around the globe gathered today at an International conference in Scottsdale to develop strategies that will reduce the worldwide incidence of Haemophilus influenzae type b, also known as Hib disease. Hib is a common form of bacterium that triggers the onset of bacterial meningitis or pneumonia. It was the leading cause of acquired mental retardation in the U.S. prior to the development of a vaccine.
