Awards Are Part Of King Day Celebrations
Had an assassin not taken the life of American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., the Atlanta native who fought for racial equality should have celebrated his 72nd birthday Monday.
The man and the ideals that he espoused instead will be remembered throughout the country Monday, when the federal holiday set aside for him will be observed.
In Albuquerque, a number of King Day ceremonies began on Friday and will continue through Monday. Included in the events will be the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Multicultural Celebration. The event will take place Monday at Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana NE, from 1 to 3 p.m., and it is open to the public. Last year, about 500 people attended the event.
