Routine screening of selected patients for acute HIV infection is edging closer toward becoming standard practice.

"Primary care physicians should immediately begin to integrate routine screening for acute HIV infection" for patients with a history of potential HIV transmission and any of the flulike symptoms that usually accompany acute HIV infection, Dr. Timothy J. Flanagan and Dr. Karen T. Tashima of Brown University in Providence, R.I., said in an editorial (Ann. Intern. Med. 134[1]:75-77, 2001).

The physicians also wrote that the screening test of choice for large-scale use is the p24 test, which detects this HIV antigen with about 87% sensitivity. The efficacy of the p24 test was documented in a report from Los Angeles ...
