The size and the lethality of initial myocardial infarctions appears to be declining among people who are younger than age 75.

But among those aged 75 years or older at the time of their first MI, the death rate did not change between 1979 and 1994, Dr. Veronique L. Roger reported at the 23rd Congress of the European Society of Cardiology.

The findings, based on a review of first-time MIs in people who lived in Olmsted County, Minn., "suggest that post-MI therapeutic gains have not occurred equally in all segments of the population," ...
