Screening patients over age 50 for colarectal cancer is becoming the standard of care, but the decision about which screening method to use depends in part on patient preference, Dr. Paul S. Frame said at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
The basic protocol for screening in Dr. Frame's practice is based on fecal occult blood testing (FOBT). The available evidence on colorectal cancer screening suggests that annual FOBT screening is more effective than biannual screening. A positive test should be followed up with colonoscopy.
