Premenopausal women using triamcinolone inhalers experience a small but statistically significant amount of bone loss that is dose dependent, a prospective cohort study suggests.
The investigators predicted that a 30-year-old woman who uses 6 puffs of triamcinolone twice a day (1,200 [micro]g) who entered menopause at age 50 would have a bone mass at the trochanter 0.106 g/ [cm.sup.2] less than that of an untreated woman. This degree of bone loss is associated with a doubling in the risk of hip fracture among women over age 65, reported Dr. Elliot Israel of the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, and his colleagues.
