ORLANDO, FLA. -- Singleton pregnancies conceived through in vitro fertilization have between double and triple the risk of several adverse outcomes, compared with spontaneously conceived pregnancies, according to results of a large metaanalysis.
"We found a two- to threefold greater risk of perinatal mortality, pre-term delivery, low birth weight, and even placenta previa in singleton IVF pregnancies," said Dr. Rebecca Jackson, the study's senior investigator and medical director of the Women's Health Center at the University.
Her metaanalysis, which she presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, included 13 studies, more than 11,000 IVF pregnancies, and a control group of 1.5 million spontaneously conceived singleton pregnancies.
The IVF pregnancies carried a 2-fold increase in perinatal mortality, a 1.9-fold increase in preterm delivery, an almost 2-fold increase in low birth weight, a 2.7-fold increase in very low birth weight (less than 1,500 g), and a 2.8-fold increase in placenta previa, after controlling for maternal age and parity.
