Shortening of the cervix early in the second trimester may signal an increased likelihood of premature birth in women who have already given birth prematurely.
That was the conclusion of a recent study in which 183 women underwent serial endovaginal ultrasonography beginning between 16 and 18 weeks' gestation, according to investigators (JAMA 286[11]:1340-48, 2001).
A total of 590 ultrasound examinations were performed during the course of the study which took place at nine centers between March 1997 and November 1999. Mean maternal age was 26 years, and the mean gestational age at delivery was 35.2 weeks.
