Fetal alcohol exposure--even in very small amounts--is associated with significant behavioral problems during childhood, Dr. Beena Sood and associates of Wayne State University, Detroit, reported.
While it has long been known that heavy alcohol use by pregnant women can lead to serious adverse effects such as fetal alcohol syndrome, little has been known about the effects of low levels of alcohol on later neurobehavioral development in children.
The historical prospective study which was conducted at Wayne State University in Detroit, included 665 women who gave birth after being screened throughout pregnancy about alcohol use. Fluid ounces of absolute alcohol consumed were averaged, and the women were stratified as having no alcohol use, low use (less than 0.3 fluid ounces of absolute alcohol per day), or moderate/heavy use (more than 0.3 fluid ounces of absolute alcohol per day).
