CHICAGO--Transdermal oxybutynin effectively reduces symptoms of overactive bladder with minimal side effects, Dr. G. Willy Davila reported at the annual meeting of the American Urogynecologic Society.
Oral oxybutynin also reduces overactive bladder symptoms, but its use is limited by anticholinergic side effects. By bypassing presystemic metabolism, transdermal oxybutynin results in lower levels of the metabolite that causes unpleasant symptoms such as dry mouth, said Dr. Davila, chairman of gynecology and head of urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Florida, Weston.
Watson Pharmaceuticals' new drug application for transdermal oxybutynin is currently under review by the Food and Drug Administration, In a study sponsored by that company, prompt decreases in urinary incontinence episodes occurred following initiation of oxybutynin or placebo patch in 447 subjects (92% women) who had been experiencing at least 10 urge incontinence episodes a week and at least eight normal voids per day with a mean voided volume of 350 cc or less.
