PHOENIX--Vitamin D supplementation can reduce the risk of falling in the elderly by 49%, Dr. Heike A. Bischoff said at the annual meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.
In a randomized study of 122 women in geriatric homes in Basel, Switzerland, the patients who received vitamin D showed significant improvement in musculoskeletal function, and that improvement probably explains the reduced risk of falling, said Dr. Bischoff of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston.
"This is a simple, easy thing to do and it is not done often enough," said Dr. Michael R. McClung, director of the Oregon Osteoporosis Center, Portland, in an interview following Dr. Bischoff's presentation.
Rates of vitamin D deficiency in the elderly in North America vary by latitude, but it is estimated that 40% of the elderly in Portland are vitamin D deficient and even 10%-20% of those in San Diego are deficient, Dr. McClung said.
