Metronidazole therapy for asymptomatic trichomoniasis infection during pregnancy does not reduce preterm delivery rates and may actually raise the risk of further complications, results of a recent study suggest.
In a randomized, double-blind study of 617 pregnant women with asymptomatic trichomoniasis, the infection resolved in 93% of those treated with metronidazole and 35% of those given placebo. Nonetheless, delivery occurred before 37 weeks' gestation significantly more often in the metronidazole group than the placebo group (19% vs. 11%). The difference was attributed primarily to an increase in preterm delivery resulting from spontaneous preterm labor, said Dr. Mark A. Klebanoff of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Bethesda, Md., and his associates.
