NASHVILLE, TENN. -- Imiquimod is now the top drug for treating external anogenital warts, Dr. Mark P. Seraly said at the annual meeting of the National Medical Association.
"The future for treating many viral infections, especially those caused by human papilloma virus, is immunologic. Imiquimod is the professional adjuvant," Dr. Seraly, a member of the speakers bureau for 3M, which markets imiquimod under the trade name Aldara.
Standard treatments for anogenital warts, such as electrosurgery, cryosurgery and podophyllin applications, are all aimed at disrupting cell membranes.
Imiquimod stimulates cell-mediated immunity, a key property given that a wart is the tip of an infection's iceberg.
