The 2001 revision of the Bethesda system for reporting Pap smear findings has removed much of the terminology that's been criticized as ambiguous ever since the last revision was made a decade ago.
The revised system should now be much easier for physicians to use, observers and those involved in the process said in interviews.
As was expected, the Bethesda System 2001 has revised the subcategories of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) in an attempt to give it a little more precision, and it reports Pap smear specimens only as either "satisfactory" or "unsatisfactory," with the terminology "satisfactory but limited by ..." ...
