Byline: Story by NILUBOL PORNPITAGPAN
To step into an exhibition by Chiang Mai-based Padungsak Kojasamrong is to be provoked to think.
Last November Padungsak staged a performance art piece at Chiang Mai University's gallery in which he sawed in half a table which was painted in black and white, while nearby a toy soldier fired a machine gun. The performance was designed to show the artist's unease with a speech by US President George Bush following the events of September 11. The US president told the world that everyone had to take sides _ people could be either with America or be counted as an enemy.
``It was too arrogant,'' said Padungsak, 38.
At the same exhibition he placed a large stack of newspapers in a box that was balanced precariously on a beam. This was to question the role of the media.
Social criticism is nothing new for this Bangkok native whose paintings, mixed media and performance art has long reflected his ideas on social problems. Padungsak has been invited to show his art in Indonesia, Hong Kong, Japan, England and Finland. This month he will stage a performance art piece in Canada.
