While delegates at the Earth Summit sat in the marble-lined precincts of plush Sandton city deadlocked on how best to reduce poverty, nearly 10,000 NGOs and local activists began marching from Alexandra, the poorest part of the city barely three kilometers away. At Sandton, residents live behind high walls, drive on smooth roads and eat in the best restaurants. The 350,000 people living in ''Alex are black and poor, and over half jobless''. One of the starkest examples of the contrast between the rich and the poor. But the march was not just about poverty. It became an occasion to vent any kind of ire - even Palestine. Dem-onstrators carried banners and wore T-shirts with messages from ''Factory Gases and Waste are Killing" and ''Hands Off Iraq'' to ''Stop Mbeki's AIDS genocide'' and ''Blair don't beat about the Bush''.
