Walter Johnson, executive secretary of the National Recreation and Park Association's Aquatic Branch for 18 years, was appointed interim chief operating officer for NRPA in August.

Johnson, who also served as NRPA's Great Lakes regional director, now oversees the daily operations at NRPA headquarters in Ashbum, Va. The association's new executive director, T. Destry Jarvis, plans to spend extensive time out of the office, meeting the members and speaking at conferences, according to Johnson.

"Destry needs somebody with knowledge of the association, experience in the field...and the background I have, to come in and handle the internal operations," Johnson said. "We'll see where we are in six to eight months, and see where we'll go from there.

"I'm in charge of internal operations," he continued. "We have some challenges with staff reorganization, organizational charts, finance and some efficiency matters. "Johnson added that the ultimate goal is to provide more membership ...
