By Lee Joo-hee Staff reporter Driven by a steady increase in transit cargo, the total number of containers handled at Korean ports increased 12.9 percent on-year in the first half of the year, statistics showed yesterday.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries said the number of containers managed at Korean ports including Busan, Gwangyang and Incheon, reached 5,409,000 TEU (equivalent to 20 feet) for the first half of this year.

By type, transit cargo totaled 1,841,000 TEU, up 26.9 percent from last year, while freight for imports and exports reached 3,391,000 TEU, up 6.1 percent.
