While many people felt a need to do something following the terrorist attacks, Casey Hughes actually took action. Hughes created a Web site, www.parkyourheart.org, to help recreation and park professionals share ideas, tell stories and discuss the roles they can play in assisting citizens and communities following the events of Sept. 11.
Through his consulting firm, KMunity Inc. of Malibu, Calif., Hughes has provided leadership training for the National Recreation and Park Association's Pacific Region. The firm -- whose services include developing strategic alliances and online communities -- currently is working with NRPA's national office to incorporate interactive components into NRPA's Web site (www.nrpa.org).
Although he had no direct loss of family or friends from the terrorist attack, Hughes "had the same loss that we all had." A conversation with one of his business partners revealed that she was offering counseling services in an office that could hold just five people. He quickly realized that a need existed for counselors, recreation professionals and others to reach out to more people.
