It irritated Elvis Costello to no end when critics hailed this album, upon its original 1994 release, as a "return to form" and an exercise in "back to basics." But the simple fact remains that it followed a long string of musical experiments, several of them notable failures, that had taken him far from his roots as an angry young postpunk singer-songwriter backed by one of the most solid trios in rock'n'roll history, the Attractions (from whom he had parted on angry terms in the 1980s).
