Film Score Monthly's origins are humble in the extreme. This magazine (and its online equivalent) began in 1992 as a photocopied-and-stapled newsletter titled The Soundtrack Club, the work of an enthusiastic Massachusetts high school student named Lukas Kendall. In ten years, this modest effort has evolved into a considerable force in the film music world. Film Score Monthly is now a glossy magazine sold on newsstands throughout the United States, and has also spawned a remarkable series of compact disc soundtrack releases, as well as the impressive Web site under consideration here.
Film Score Monthly offers some of the most articulate and perceptive writing on film music available today. Most of the Web site's contents are the work of Kendall (who has since graduated from Amherst College and moved to Los Angeles to work full-time on the magazine), Jeff Bond, and Andy Dursin. Their writing has just the right dose of youthful cynicism, and is a welcome antidote to the worshipful tone found on other film music Web sites. ...
