While Nicolas Slonimsky was preparing the first edition of Music Since 1900 (New York: W. W. Norton, 1937), Henry Cowell advised him that, although the idea for the book was "perfectly stupendous," the title was "dry" and would "appeal only to highbrow librarians" (Nicolas Slonimsky, Perfect Pitch: A Life Story [Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1988], 154).
