`My first priority is to make contacts among the thousands of individuals and organisations who come to enjoy our woods'. Described by the Forestry Commission as its `new man in the Marches', on the English-Welsh border, forester Mark Crowley was commenting on his appointment to take charge of 20 woods in an area bounded by Presteigne, Knighton, Ludlow and Leominster.

Hailing from the latter town, Mark reckoned that his 3000 hectares of woodland comprised some of Britain's most beautiful countryside. Its many visitors, he said, came from universities, schools and wildlife …
