Can the Rainbow Alliance now survive? Vice-President George Saitoti's sacking leaves it in considerable disarray.

By hitting at their most prominent member, President Moi has just upped the pressure on them. It seems that having failed to convince them to back his man, his objective now is to scatter them. Whether the group will put up or shut up is the big question.

But far from weakening the anti-Uhuru forces within the party, Prof Saitoti's sacking has the potential to turn into a blessing in disguise for them.

For Prof Saitoti is now free from the baggage of collective responsibility which has prevented him from coming out to fight like a real politician. …
