Democratic Party (DP) president general Paul Ssemogerere and co-petitioners in the constitutional case challenging the Political Organisations Act (POA) registered their first smiles yesterday when court granted their application to adjourn the hearing.
Ssemogerere and other opposition leaders petitioned the constitutional court to declare POA null and void on grounds that it is unconstitutional and seeks to establish a one-party state.
The counsel for the petitioners, Joseph Balikuddembe, applied for adjournment on the first day of hearing, saying he needed to seek further instructions and to study affidavits (evidence) from the respondent (government).
Attorney General Francis Ayume, who appeared before the court for the first time since he assumed office, objected to the application, prompting quick interjections from the judges.
