Hundreds of Liberian elementary school students are out of school in Danane, the Ivory Coast, due to a new policy that closed down foreign-owned elementary schools.
The new educational policy introduced by authorities in Danane, requires that all elementary students up to Grade 6 must attend Ivorian elementary schools and to do their elementary courses in the French language.
The Talking Drum Studio Bong correspondent Oscar Dolo, who visited Danane, reported that the affected Liberian students "are now roaming the streets in the area."
Oscar Dolo said the new policy was put in place a year ago by the UNHCR and is being implemented by the government of the Ivory Coast as part of the UNHCR's reintegration program.
