The National Human Rights Center of Liberia has dismissed as unacceptable and undue interference, the description of the writ of Habeas Corpus issued by the Court Martial Board as "null and void" by the Ministry of National Defense.
In reports by a local daily yesterday, Assistant Defense Minister for public affairs Philibert Brown said his ministry considers the writ of habeas corpus on the ministry to produce the living bodies of journalist Hassan Bility, Mohammed and Ansumana Kamara on August 7, 2002 as "null and void."
Minister Brown noted that the writ was issued at the time the Court Martial Board was on recess and was not mandated by the relevant authority to reconvene.
However, the National Human Rights Center, in a release, described the action of the defense authorities as a seemingly calculated attempt to prolong justice, thereby keeping the detainees in indefinite detention without trial.
