The Minister for Women and Children's Affairs, Hon. Gladys Asmah, has stated that the challenge for women in the 21st century is for them to play a more active, direct and visible roles in the decision-making process of the country.
According to the sector minister, though many have argued extensively that what is needed is "a critical mass of women" to take up effective positions of authority and power, her ministry, notwithstanding these argument, would encourage women to play active roles in politics from the local government level.
Hon. Asmah made this known at a press briefing on her ministry's contributions to the empowerment of women into the district assemblies elections, which is scheduled for the first week of this month.
Giving reasons why women should climb the political ladder through the local government, she noted that since decisions made by local government have direct impact on the private lives of women, as well as catering for their traditional needs, women gain experience in participating from that level.
